Commentary (Kirkwood et al): Radiotherapy for Cutaneous Malignant Melanoma: Rationale and Indications

چکیده

Radiotherapy is a standard recourse in the treatment of inoperable metastatic disease of bone and brain. The control of brain metastases with radiosurgery produces excellent results, and this strategy has progressively replaced initial surgery.[1] Radiotherapy of advanced primary lesions that are incompletely operable and lymph node metastases that are unresectableor recurrences that develop after systemic metastases are already evident-has also become part of standard practice, based on significant palliation that has not required prospective randomized controlled trials for validation. Despite these wellestablished precedents, elective radiotherapy of nodal basins is quite another matter, for which high-level data (that might permit its recommendation in routine practice) do not exist.

Radiotherapy for cutaneous malignant melanoma: rationale and indications.

The use of radiation as adjuvant therapy for patients with cutaneous malignant melanoma has been hindered by the unsubstantiated belief that melanoma cells are radioresistant. An abundance of literature has now demonstrated that locoregional relapse of melanoma is common after surgery alone when certain clinicopathologic features are present. Features associated with a high risk of primary tumo...

Liver Metastases of Unknown Primary: Malignant Melanoma

According to the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) data, the increase in the number of patients diagnosed with malignant melanoma was found to be at a higher rate than the current increase in all other types of cancer (Jemal et al., 2008). Oral Malignant Melanoma

It is generally accepted that the outcome of oral malignant melanoma is worse than that of cutaneous and systemic head and neck melanoma. The five-year survival reported in the literature for oral melanomas varies from 0 20 % (Liversedge, 1975, Rapidis et al., 2003, Rapini et al., 1985), whereas the overall survival for head and neck melanomas ranges between 20 and 48 % (Guzzo et al., 1993, Pat...

The diagnostic challenge of amelanotic melanoma – case reports and short review of the literature

Introduction Cutaneous melanoma represents a very aggressive type of cancer that has one of the fastest growing incidences worldwide, with over 150000 new cases estimated in developing countries in 2010 (Jemal et al 2011). Although it represents only 10% of the total cutaneous malignant tumours, melanoma is responsible for over 90% of the deaths caused by these tumours (Jemal et al 2011). Amela...
